L'homme des confins - for an intercultural anthropology

"L'homme des confins"* - for an intercultural anthropology

Cultural anthropology is still viewed with some suspicion in French intellectual circles.  These misgivings stem from the awareness of its inherent risks, the seriousness of which we are all too aware of.  We dread above all the dangers of American culturalism which is perceived as going against a certain French ideal of universalism, in the name of which we shy away from defining people according to their culture, afraid of boxing them into a constructed reality which may well not correspond to the fundamental choices of the person concerned.  French universalism strives to the opposite of this: to liberate people from all forms of determinism (race, social class, birthplace, religion) and encourage them to choose their identity according to their own preferences, affinities, values.

The importance of this is not only theoretical, but also takes on a concrete political dimension.  Behind this refusal to give people a "distinct cultural label" lies the obsessive fear of compromising the French ideal of integrating people from different cultures, based on the voluntary act of adhering to the shared values of republican citizenship.  In this context, describing a person as belonging to such or such a culture is not a neutral statement, as the limits between description and determinism are quickly crossed.  That being the case, the concept of cultural identity becomes difficult to deal with: at the heart of the thinking on individual cultural self-determination, which is seen as desirable as it liberates from determinisms that can be a burden, this term has become a kind of taboo that we scrupulously avoid using from a fear of sinking into a cultural essentialism correctly perceived as dangerous - the risks of manipulating identity, which can lead to a war of cultures that we want at all costs to avoid, are well known.

Without disregarding the necessary caution when looking at identity and alterity, we intend to reflect on an intercultural anthropology which slots quite naturally into the advances in information and communication technologies, which are particularly well predisposed to determine the importance of images, words and perceptions, cultural as well as political, that can lead to stereotypes.  Several works which look at the question of cultural mediation all stem from the same preoccupation: "Being civilised today means assuming several identities without any kind of nostalgia, without any fuss but (...) with detachment" (D. Bougnoux).

The recent recomposition of the European continent poses the question of cultural cohabitation in other terms, and this is at the heart of the debate on democracy.  We intend to put forward the concept of "l'homme des confins" as the symbolic figure of this new way of assuming ones belonging to human culture.  Other models from the "youngest Europe" (Kloczowski) question the dominant model in Western Europe (the Polish version where culture and religion are not easily separated, the Hungarian version with Reiner's law of personal autonomy, the Czech version with a strong relativisation of all the constituent elements of national identity).  On the other hand the works of Demorgon, Cohen Emerique, Winkin, Todorov, Augé, Schnapper contribute to the development of cultural anthropology à la française, but each one of these approaches puts forward only one particular aspect of the question at hand:

Demorgon lays out grand theoretical models of societies and their interaction, Cohen Emerique works on personal identity and cultural shocks, Winkin demonstrates the limits of the interculturalism originating in American anthropology and which is all too often manipulated, Todorov analyses humanist currents in French culture and the figures of travellers.  Augé looks at what links anthropology and history, whereas Schnapper deals in depth with the sociology of inter-ethnic relations and modern citizenship.

Drawing from all these approaches and taking into consideration the new European context, we propose to put forward an alternative way of looking at transcultural relations.  We have to get away from the particular, the approach used by ethnologists, in order to arrive at a more general model, to then be in a position to risk confrontations with other models.  The aim is to reflect not on Man's place in a given society, but on society's place in Man and on the specificity of modern intercultural dialogue, a dialogue where references are not common straight away; (in this respect the work of Francis Jacques on referential dialogue is particularly fertile).

Little by little, instead of being from "here" or "elsewhere", we all become "l'homme des confins", at the same time from here and elsewhere, trying to negotiate our own sense of belonging which respects our individual characteristics and contributes to the universal.

Key words: cultural anthropology, "confins", dialogue

*The expression "l'homme des confins" literally means "Man of frontiers".  It is a concept developed by the author and it essentially means having a plural identity open to different cultural paradigms at the same time.  It is a kind of simultaneous intimacy with several cultures (but more than a simple cosmopolitism which is much more superficial).
